L’Ile aux Trésors Candle

Les Senteurs’ first candle collection is inspired by the history of the Hawksley and Nicholson families, who came together as Michael and Betty
Hawksley – the co-founders of Les Senteurs.

Betty’s mother lived as a small child in Madagascar. As we investigated, we learned of this unique island’s rich and abundant natural
resources and the possible scientifically beneficial potential of its flora.

There are stories that pirates founded their own anarchist colony in Madagascar, which they named Libertalia. On Libertalia, the pirates
supposedly created a new language and operated a socialist economy. ​

Whether Libertalia existed or not, what is indisputable is that for a time, Madagascar was a key stopping off point for pirates.

Today all that is left of the semi-mythical land is a pirates' graveyard in Ile Sainte Marie...
